The Rebecca Finn House
The History of The Rebecca Finn House.
A Legacy Begins – The Story of The Rebecca Finn House in Tom’s River, New Jersey.
Born from wealth and ambition, Rebecca Finn crafted a summer home to become a Toms River landmark.
Rebecca Finn, a prominent New York socialite and heiress, envisioned a summer retreat away from the city's bustle.
In 1868, she found her inspiration in Toms River, New Jersey, a blossoming resort town newly connected to New York by railroad.
Her Gothic-style summer home quickly symbolized elegance and Toms River's allure.
Victorian Gothic Charm Meets Modern Elegance.
Constructed with a Gothic vernacular style, The Rebecca Finn House captivates with its pointed arches, steeply pitched roof, and intricate window designs.
Over the years, it has retained these architectural elements, remaining an example of Victorian elegance.
Preserving History with a Personal Touch.
When new owner Danette arrived from New York City, she saw herself as a steward of The Rebecca Finn House’s legacy.
With a personal connection to Rebecca’s story, Danette embraced the responsibility of restoring the house to its original beauty.
Her vision was clear: maintain the historic details like moldings, flooring, and windows while infusing fresh décor.
Danette has created a space that blends historic charm with a modern edge by adding a nautical theme and a nod to the Toms River's maritime legacy.
A New Era with the Stoutenburgh and Minturn Families.
As The Rebecca Finn House changed hands, it welcomed new stories and subtle transformations.
After Rebecca’s time, John Stoutenburgh, another affluent New Yorker, became the next owner.
Marrying into the local community, Stoutenburgh enjoyed the role of commodore at the Toms River Yacht Club for over twenty years.
Later, Judge James F. Minturn added a personal touch, installing a side porch in 1905 and converting the attic into his private studio.
This family maintained the house’s character until the 1980s, ensuring it remained an emblem of elegance.
